::New York: Graffiti Field Identification Guide Part 2::

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

The days of New Yorkers writing graffiti are fading. Many of the newest crop of writers are Midwestern transplants and art school graduates who have given up the spray can in favor of wheat pasting and sticker-bombing. The old Blade, Dondi, and Zephyr pieces have been buffed or faded in all but a few closely guarded locations. There’s no doubt that Gotham’s graff scene is changing. It’s an inevitable process, as those who have been influenced by New York artists (vandals?) grow up and move to the city that started it all. Many argue that what these newcomers do isn’t graffiti at all, at least not in the traditional hip-hop sense. But New York is still the most important city in the world for graffiti, serving as a center for international graffiti and streets artists like Banksy, Os Gemeos, and the London Police. What follows is a handy identification guide of New York’s artists, graffiti or otherwise, who are putting their work out there, whether we like it or not.

::An excerpt from the vandal squad book coming this fall - Menos::

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

MENOS
We first became interested in MENOS after he went All
City. He was hitting all over the place but didn’t
dabble with the Subway. He was a street bomber and
also did a lot of Amtrak, Metro North, and Long Island
Railroad. We had a lot of connections with cops
covering those trains and they were constantly calling
us to ask, “Hey, you know who this guy is?” We saw
that he was getting big and decided to find out who
the hell he was. He was another one that was hard to
find because he had no permanent residence and was out
there bouncing around.

::Graffiti on the Rise Citywide::

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

New stats from the NYPD show an 81.5% rise in graffiti-related complaints from 2006 to 2007 (pre-Splasher!), a year that graffiti arrests also went up 28%.

Queens council member Peter Vallone, Jr. notes that, “we did an excellent job turning the tide against graffiti in the ’90s and the beginning part of this century. Unfortunately, because of the lack of police officers, the fact that they have to do double duty and combat serious threats like terrorism, minor crime, including graffiti, are on the rise.” As such, Vallone has turned the graffiti problem into his own personal battle, along with his attempt at trying to pass a law against daredevils climbing buildings (something that happens once in a blue moon).

Vallone blames evil pop culture for the insurgence, however the NYPD notes that the numbers could just be a result of “better reporting and police work”; in 2007 police began logging 311 and 911 graffiti complaints and documenting the identities of taggers. More stats after the jump…

::’Bomb It’ Review and Interview::

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Jon Reiss‘ latest documentary, “Bomb It,” explores the controversial subculture of graffiti through themes of public space, freedom of speech, corporate advertising, and social and political issues. The film visits cities from around the world - Los Angeles, Philadelphia, New York, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Barcelona, Cape Town, Sao Pãulo and Tokyo - and delves into how writers have incorporated graffiti into each of their varying cultures as a means of expression, protest, and beautification.

::Laser Attention::

Monday, April 21st, 2008

Take a look at Toronto City Hall and what do you see? An architecturally unique government building or a massive canvas awaiting a graffiti artist’s touch?

The facade of City Hall was given a temporary facelift early yesterday morning as out-of-town graffiti artists tagged its east tower with a laser pointer and projector in lieu of the traditional spray can of paint.

Projecting phrases of political protest and vulgar humour, the pair attracted the attention of dozens of onlookers on the street, countless confused gawkers from apartment blocks across downtown, and three Toronto police officers who urged the high-tech artists to keep their messages clean.
