Graffiti Artists Hold Panel With Old Nemeses in Blue

Back in the day, Cope2, a Bronx graffiti legend as big as a linebacker, usually found himself in proximity to police officers only when they were tracking him in the metallic darkness of a subway yard or when they finally caught up to him and hauled him in.

But on Thursday night he sat willingly within reach of three officers — or at least three retired ones — on a comfortable couch at the powerHouse Arena, an art gallery and bookstore in the Dumbo section of Brooklyn. The officers, one of whom had arrested Cope2 several years earlier when he was leaving his house to walk his pit bulls, sat on another couch across from him and two fellow graffiti artists.

For the next hour and a half, in front of a packed room, all six were guests on a kind of bizarre hip-hop “Dick Cavett Show,” featuring profanity, accusations of police brutality and lots of memories from the days when both the artists and officers were younger and more agile, fully enlisted in the cat-and-mouse game of New York City graffiti in its heyday.

Shepard Fairey - Can a Rebel Stay a Rebel Without the Claws?

BOSTON — You will be seeing a lot more art by Shepard Fairey on the streets of New York this spring. But it won’t be in the form of the illegal guerrilla strikes he has been committing since his days as a student at the Rhode Island School of Design 20 years ago, nor anything like his famous Obama Hope poster. For starters, it is in the windows of Saks Fifth Avenue, for whom he has also designed swanky red, white and black Russian Constructivist-style limited-edition shopping bags.

Montana - Stak Can?!?!

stak-can.gif

Montana has supported many events all over the world, and the product has gone through the hands of many of the best Graff talents. But, here is a project done in poor taste.

There is only one STAK, and if you’re in the Graff game, and you know your history, you must promote the real deal!

I know many people use names that are existing, and they feel that they should have a stab at someone elses title, but…. Does it make sense for me to take the name ‘Robert Deniro’, and then go on to Hollywood to persue an acting career? Should I publish a book as ‘Stephen King’?

Know what you are promoting, especially if you are reaching out to the Graff consumer. This is quite the oppostie of collectable. It’s bad taste.

Shouts to STAK The Ripper, TFP!!

Wii Spray

Looks like Spray Paint is going to a new medium… Virtual!
Although there are games that have featured Graff as a medium, this is the first I have seen that has made paint a ‘virtual’ tool.

There have been machines and other inventions that have been painting, but this is a device that is going to give an individual the ability to virtually paint!

As for how this is being applied to the Wii, we are not sure, but this is the beginning of a new age, and I am sure it is going to be impressive.

The actual device has over 120 levels of pressure, and will be able to help at angles that the user can feel comfortable. Whether you are left or right handed, this is a friendly for all.

It will be interesting to see how they apply this to stencils and other mediums that are part of the graff game, and as an artist, technique is key!

Looking forward to seeing what comes out of this.
